Employee Leave

Leave of absence is one of the privileges that every employee deserves. There are various types of leave that an employee can file including vacation, sick leave and paid time off. It’s one of the benefits that employees can avail in case they want to recharge or if they have personal and important matters to attend to. Under the employment laws, the employer should give a job protected leave that includes workers compensation as cited in the Family and Medical Leave Act Laws. Paid employee leave is also given to employees during holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving as well as other holidays observe by the state.

Types of leave of absence with pay

Annual Leave

Permanent employees having full time positions are entitled to receive or enjoy the benefits of annual leave provided by the following conditions:

•             Employees who have been in the service for less than 10 years can earn five hours in every pay period, but there should be 240 hours annual leave time balance.
•             One year completion of service entitles the employee to earn six hours of annual employee leave in every pay period provided that there should be a time balance of 288 hours.
•             An employee who had been in the service for 15 years can earn seven hours annual leave for every pay period and there a time balance of 336 hours.

On the other hand, if the employee who is entitled to receive the benefits of annual leave have been separated or resigned from the job, the company has still the obligation to pay in cash the equivalent of the accumulated leave, but shall not exceed the maximum allowable accumulation. The annual leave is granted and approved the appointing authority or agency.

Sick leave

Sick leave is given to employees in a full time or permanent position. The employee can obtain five hours of approved sick leave in every pay period per every semi-month. The sick leave can be filed without limits. It can also be converted into retirement credit in case it is not consumed by the employee until the retirement.  Likewise, the sick leave balance can still be restored once the employee has returned to service after he has been separated, but returned within five years.

In the same manner, sick leave is also granted to an employee having eligible positions and having a minimum of 40 hours paying status. It’s important that every employee should be guided accordingly in terms of filing and availing this type of leave.

Parental leave

Any employee who has been in the service for a minimum of 12 months and has been worked for a minimum of 1,250 hours within 12 consecutive months is also eligible to avail parental leave. However, once the employee return for work, medical documentations should be secured for submission to the company.

The Human Resources Department is the one responsible for the approval and processing of leave requests. If you think that you’re eligible to avail leave of absence either with pay or without, you should inform the HR officer and secure the necessary documents.
